Persons Day: October 18th, 1929…
The Famous Five (Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby) won a hard-fought victory, appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada, and then the British Privy Council, who ruled that women were to be considered persons under the law.

In her former role, Madame Jean worked tirelessly to address the plight of women around the world. In the years since leaving office, she continues to represent Canadians faithfully, acting in her role as UN Special Envoy to Haiti as well as Chancellor of the University of Ottawa and Co-President of the Michaëlle Jean Foundation.

Calgary LEAF 2012 Persons Day Breakfast

LEAF Calgary will hold its 3rd  annual Persons Day Breakfast on Thursday, October 25, 2012.  Madam Justice Sheilah L. Martin of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench will be the keynote speaker and share her perspectives on the relevance of the landmark 1929 “Persons” case today.

The breakfast will take place in room Glen 206 at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.

Tables and tickets are available.  Tables are $500.  Regular tickets are $65.  (Tax receipts will be issued for tables and regular tickets.)

Edmonton LEAF 2012 Persons Day Breakfast

LEAF Edmonton will hold their annual Persons Day Breakfast on Monday, October 29, 2012.

The breakfast will take place at the Sutton Place Hotel located at 101235-101 Street in Edmonton.

Tables and tickets are available.  Tables are $550.  Regular tickets are $55.  Student/Senior/Under Employed tickets are $20.  (Tax receipts will be issued for tables and regular tickets.)

This year, LEAF Edmonton is proud to present Jan Wong at its annual Persons Day Breakfast.  Jan Wong was one of the Globe and Mail’s best-known reporters. One day she turned in a story that set off a firestorm of controversy, and for the first time in her professional life, fell into a severe clinical depression. Wong will speak about her struggle with workplace-caused depression, and her eventual emergence from it. This provocative presentation will be of interest to lawyers, students, disability rights advocates, psychologists, and anyone with in an interest in equality.

Ottawa LEAF 2012 Persons Day Breakfast

LEAF Ottawa’s Annual Person’s Day Breakfast will take place next Friday, Oct. 19th, at the National Arts Centre from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Karin Galldin from Galldin + Robertson (the first feminist legal practice in Ottawa) will be delivering our keynote address along with the local organization, Families in Sisters in Spirit,  to speak to the missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada.

Tickets are being sold in the front lobby of Fauteux Hall at the University of Ottawa from 11:00 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct . 10th, Thursday, Oct. 11th and Monday Oct. 15th. Tickets are $15 for students/seniors, and $40 for professionals/professors/other.

Sudbury LEAF 2012 – At the Movies with LEAF

LEAF  Sudbury is hosting its 23rd annual celebration of the historic decision deeming Canadian women “persons” under the law.  LEAF Sudbury is presenting Quest for Honor a film by Mary Ann Smothers Bruni at the Rainbow Cinemas in the Rainbow Mall on Thursday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m. (Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.)

Quest for Honor, follows former teacher and tireless activist Runak Furnaj as she works with Kurdish activists, journalists, and lawmen to help solve the murder of a widowed young mother, protect the victim of a safe-house shooting, redefine honour, and stop the slew of “honor killings” which endanger tens of thousands of women in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and adjoining countries.

Quest for Honor was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to screen in Iraq, as well.

Tickets are $30 each and include complimentary popcorn, soft drink, and candy during the film.  A question and answer session and a reception will follow in the lobby after the film.  Tickets can be purchased at the Rainbow Cinemas, Apollo Restaurant, Paris Natural Foods, Black Cat and the Laurentian Bookstore.

 

Windsor LEAF 2012 Persons Day Luncheon

LEAF Windsor commemorates Persons Day by each year hosting a luncheon.  This year’s keynote speaker is Beth Symes.  Traditionally, LEAF Windsor hosts its event over the lucnh period, to encourage greater participation from students, staff and faculty of the University.  A light lunch will be provided.  A Fundraiser Raffle will be held the morning of the luncheon to raise money for LEAF. The event itself is free.

The luncheon will be held on Wednesday, October 24 in the University of Windsor Law Faculty building.

LEAF Manitoba will hold its 22nd Annual Persons Day Breakfast on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
