And LEAF Founders – Beth Atcheson, Mary Eberts, Marilou McPhedren, Yvonne Peters, Eloise Spitzer, Beth Symes and Susan Tanner.

These women are a special group of women lawyers who have made a difference for women and girls in Canada.

Equality Day: A Celebration of Women in Toronto marked the 25th Anniversary of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and also the 25th anniversary of Section 15 (the Equality Clause) in the Charter. To mark the occasion, LEAF will showcased fifteen amazing women lawyers as well as a group of LEAF Founders.

A crowd of 350 people joined Kirby Chown and Sylvia Chrominska, Co-Chairs in honouring these women lawyers who have made a difference.

On April 15, the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) is launching a national Youth Commission to celebrate 25 years of the equality section of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

LEAF celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the Persons case by paying tribute to our mothers and grandmothers. The following biographies are of women born before 1929, and considered "non persons" at a time in history, but despite the odds and challenges have gone on to do amazing things in their lives, their professions and their communities.

LEAF's 2009 Toronto Equality Day Event Celebrating Women

In the golden era of Chefs, the question for many is, "where are the women?" On April 15th, 2009, a few exceptional individuals in the field, answered that question by displaying their culinary talents for an Equality Day event organized by LEAF. Mouth watering hors d'oeuvres and organic beverages were served at George Brown Chef School to the more than 200 guests in attendance.

Special guest Chefs included, Amar Patel of the Indian Rice Factory, Heather Baker from the President's Choice Test Kitchen, Dinah Koo of Dinah's Soup Kitchen and Koo & Co. Catering, Susie Reading of the Calphalon Culinary Center, and the Art Gallery of Ontario's Anne Yarymowich. Event Co-chairs, Donna Dooher, Chef, author and owner of Mildred's Temple Kitchen and Sonja Smit, Gemini nominated actress and proprieotor of Closson Chase Winery capped the evening off with an interactive cooking and wine presentation.

Deborah Paskus (Closson Chase Vineyards), Ann Sperling (Southbrook Vineyards), and Sue-Ann Staff (Megalomaniac Winery) also gave talks throughout the evening and graced a captive audience with their inspiring journies of breaking the glass ceilling. Culinary students from George Brown Chef school provided additional catering and were treated to an evening of mentorship from some of Canada's top Chefs.
