The Board of Governor’s of Saint Mary’s University in Halifax has reversed its decision to eliminate its women’s hockey team. Faced with a budget crunch, the board previously axed the women’s (and only the women’s) team. What were they thinking?! Faced with throngs of protestors, national media coverage, and a timely, generous donation of $60,000 from Canadian Tire, the board has now apologized to the women.
University president, Colin Dodds, said “I was troubled that the decision last week created the impression that Saint Mary’s was backing away from our mission of support for gender equality in academics, athletics and all aspects of university life” . We were, too, Colin!
