LEAF has made a submission to the public consultation underway in Ontario, the Changing Workplaces Review, which is looking into amending the Labour Relations Act, 1995 and Employment Standards Act, 2000 particularly with respect to non-standard and precarious work.
LEAF’s submission focuses on the effect of scheduling irregularity on women’s childcare obligations, income insecurity and participation in the labour force. This submission follows from our 2014 intervention in Johnstone v CBSA in which we argued that employers cannot discriminate against employees with childcare responsibilities. LEAF stated that discrimination on the basis of family status is intertwined with sex discrimination given that most caregivers continue to be women.
