With the appointment of its Executive Director & General Counsel, Shaun O’Brien, to Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice, we see yet again that LEAF’s litigators, scholars and volunteers are leaders in the development of equality law in Canada and are recognized as significant voices shaping Canadian jurisprudence.
As LEAF celebrates Shaun’s appointment, it has also begun the process of recruiting new executive leadership for the organization. In 2018, LEAF aligned its operational leadership with responsibility for legal work, creating the position of Executive Director & General Counsel. The search to fill this position with a visionary feminist leader able to shepherd LEAF through the next period of growth has already begun.
In the interim, LEAF has developed a plan to maintain program stability and continue to advance the ambitious goals of its current projects. LEAF will be working with the firm CALIBRATE to assist with the executive transition. Dr Elizabeth Shilton, LEAF Chair, will step in on a voluntary basis as Interim Executive Director to manage day-to-day operations, supporting staff and ensuring financial accountability. New projects will continue without interruption as LEAF works to advance substantive equality for women and girls though rigorous feminist legal action.
