Quebec employers are now required to consistently maintain pay equity in their workplace, rather than evaluating salaries every five years—with no back-pay obligations. A new trial has been ordered for a cab driver accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the back of his taxi. She was so intoxicated the police shook her awake, and her urine soaked underpants were in the hands of the accused, yet he was acquitted because the first trial judge determined that the woman may have been conscious at the time the sexual activity started and capable of consenting. In Nova Scotia, the Court of Appeal has ruled that a woman and her three children should not have been disqualified from receiving social assistance because her partner didn’t go to an appointment with his employment counsellor.
With the support of pro bono counsel, community partners and our generous donors, the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) intervened in these important cases. Together, we are ensuring that women’s substantive rights are recognized by Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms—and shaping the national conversation on gender equality. It is our pleasure to invite you to join us as we celebrate the recognition of women’s legal rights and another fabulous year for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) at our annual Persons Day Gala.
We’re hosting this year’s event at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.
We’ll share a wonderful evening of cocktails, culinary delights, and community with hundreds of supporters from the legal, feminist, academic, activist, corporate, and union sectors. Plus, this year, we’re pleased to present The Ghomeshi Effect, a documentary dance-theatre performance on sexual violence and the legal system.
The Person’s Day Gala is our largest and most important event. The funds raised will directly support LEAF’s work to advance substantive equality rights for women and girls through litigation, law reform and public education.
Individual tickets and limited-edition ticket packages are available.
This event is only possible with the generous support of our sponsors. Please download our Sponsorship Package and contact us if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing you on October 9th!
