Alberta should expand human rights education in K-6 social studies curriculum

In December 2023, LEAF National and LEAF Edmonton wrote to Alberta’s Minister of Education as part of the public consultation process reviewing Alberta’s kindergarten to grade 6 (K-6) curriculum. The key recommendation was to expand meaningful, age-appropriate components on human rights and substantive equality in the K-6 social studies curriculum, as protected in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Alberta Human Rights Act (AHRA).
