In March 1987, LEAF provided the Ontario Task Force on Mandatory Retirement (The Ianni Commission) with a submission concerning the impact of mandatory retirement on women.
LEAF’s submission described some of the serious economic and social effects of mandatory retirement on elderly women, resulting from factors such as:
- The generally lower wages paid to women relative to men
- The different career history of women workers
- The correspondingly lower or non-existent pension benefits women generally receive
The submission also argued that mandatory retirement represented sex discrimination.
