August 11, 2021 – This morning, LEAF and LEAF Edmonton submitted a letter to the City of Edmonton’s Community and Public Services Committee as they consider a proposed by-law on hate-motivated harassment.
This by-law is being considered in the wake of the terrible series of misogynist, racist, and Islamophobic attacks on women in Edmonton.
LEAF condemns these attacks and supports calls from community members in Edmonton to establish a plan to stop street harassment and racist violence in Alberta. In our letter, we emphasize that any measures and programs developed by the City of Edmonton must be developed in consultation with affected communities. We have also asked for the opportunity to provide input into the development of any by-law or other measures taken.
