In 1995, LEAF provided the Commission of Inquiry into Certain Events at the Prison for Women in Kingston with a submission on proposed cross-gender staffing at the new regional institutions for federally-sentenced women.
The brief addressed the equality issues for women which arose as a result of the Correctional Service of Canada’s decision to allow men to be hired as “front-line” staff in the new facilities. It focused primarily on federally-sentenced women’s rights to equality and security of the person as guaranteed under ss. 15 and 7 of the Charter.
