In January 2024, LEAF provided a submission to the Federal Standing Committee on Health for the Women’s Health Study.
LEAF recommends that the federal government prioritize sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as a critical aspect of gender equality and reproductive justice in Canada. The following key recommendations were made in the submission:
- Invest in primary care and sexual and reproductive healthcare
- Commit to a national strategy on sex-ed
- Invest in a national pharmacare plan, including universal contraception coverage
- Work with Indigenous communities to shift away from the Birth Evacuation Policy
LEAF stresses that protecting the health and wellbeing of women, trans, and non-binary people is central to advancing reproductive justice. This requires broad social, economic, and political shifts to ensure equity in all systems. The federal government must center those most impacted in the development and implementation of policies and programs to achieve reproductive justice and gender equality for all.
